March
17: I highlighted a strong
weekly and
daily MACD Divergence on Diamond Offshore
Drilling [DO] - close
on 3/17/09 at 62.64. I expected the March 65 calls that were around 0.40 on Tuesday to move
as much as a
1000% before the end of the week. ( I was
wrong...see below)
March 18: The stock trades down to 61.30
in the morning before closing at 64.
March 19: The stock gaps open and by 3pm
eastern was trading at 70.22 and the March 65 calls
last trade was at 6.04, well beyond the 1000% I could
see from the divergence.
10 contracts of the DO March 65 calls Wednesday March 18th would have
cost you around $400. You could have sold them the next day, late
afternoon for around $6,000, that's a 1500% gain!
How much were you
risking on this trade? Just $400.
If you'd used that same $400 to buy DO stock, you'd have 6 shares.
Selling the next trading day at $70.22 you'd have a made only $30. It's all
in the leverage.....$5600 gain vs $30 gain. Can You do the Math?
